A Natural Hand Gesture System for People with Brachial Plexus Injuries
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper focuses on a design case study of a natural hand gesture system for users with intact motion control of the metacarpophalangeal joint and thumb basal joint of the hand after brachial plexus injuries. The lexicon of hand gestures had eight entries and was demonstrated to be natural and ergonomic with the limited hand motions. A cooperative multi-cue system was proposed for the key hand posture recognition of the proposed hand gestures. We utilized the designed system into a remote smart car control and electric wheelchair control. Experimental a results demonstrated the robustness and potential feasibility of the system in human-computer interaction for the proposed users. ∗ corresponding author 368 J. Zeng, F. Wang, Y. Sun

Planning brachial plexus surgery: treatment options and priorities.
Brachial plexus injuries are devastating and usually result from high-energy trauma in young patients. Clinicians treating brachial plexus injuries need to recognize the pattern of injury presenting in each patient. Most injuries can be described as either supraclavicular or infraclavicular. The specific injury is determined by means ofa precise workup, including careful physical examination, e...
متن کاملGlenohumeral deformity in children with brachial plexus birth injuries.
Shoulder deformity remains the most common musculo-skeletal sequela following a brachial plexus birth injury. The natural history of untreated glenohumeral deformity is one of progression in this unique patient population. In infants and young children with persistent neurological deficits, shoulder dysfunction becomes a major source of morbidity, as these children have extreme difficulty placi...
متن کاملSensory restoration by lateral antebrachial cutaneous to ulnar nerve transfer in children with global brachial plexus injuries.
Selective peripheral nerve transfers represent an emerging reconstructive strategy in the management of both pediatric and adult brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries. Transfer of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve of the forearm into the distal ulnar nerve is a useful means to restore sensibility to the ulnar side of the hand when indicated. This technique is particularly valuabl...
متن کاملThe Role of MRI in the Diagnosis of Post-sternotomy Injuries of the Brachial Plexus
Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) is an uncommon complication of median sternotomy capable of causing a permanent or transitory sensitivity and/or motor function impairment in the upper limbs. During a cardiac surgery through sternotomy, for the assessment of the thoracic cage configuration and the site of mediastinal structures, a broader surgical field may be required. If the sternal retractors ar...

Traumatic injuries to the brachial plexus in adults are severely debilitating. They generally affect young individuals. A thorough understanding of the anatomy, clinical evaluation, imaging and electrodiagnostic assessments, treatment options and proper timing of surgical interventions will enable nerve surgeons to offer optimal care to patients. Advances in microsurgical technique have improve...
